Nigerian wrestler, Blessing Oborududu, on Tuesday 4th August 2021 was publicly announced as the second world woman wrestler and the first Nigeria medalist in Tokyo Olympics 2020 and her gold medal celebration went viral.
She has created a history in Nigeria wrestling by emerging the first woman wrestler ever to win an Olympic medal for her country.
Oborududu took over from Daniel Igali, a Canadian-Nigerian wrestler whose winning history has been in the record for over 21 years as the pioneer wrestling medalist in Nigeria.
No wrestler has ever won a medal Olympic Games in wrestling tournaments since the history of Nigerian participation in the Olympics.
However, Oborududu breaks the myth this time; opens Nigeria’s history in wrestling; accounts as a commonwealth champion and wins a medal in women’s 68kg freestyle wrestling event at Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Oborududu, who’s now ranking as the top second world woman freestyle wrestler and the topmost Nigerian athlete to win a medal in Olympic Games took her hero-worship from Daniel Igali.
Igali, who is globally recognised as an Olympic champion switched nationality to Canada and is currently the president of the Nigerian Wrestling Federation.
Both champions, in persons of Blessing Oborududu and Daniel Igali indeed have made Nigeria wrestling special and a source of inspiration.
